9 questions to define your startup’s stage
I’ve noticed there’s some confusion around what it means to be an “early-stage” startup. With so many different definitions floating around, it’s easy to get lost in the terminology.
So, I’ve put together a simple checklist to help you determine if you truly fit into the early-stage category.
If you find yourself answering “yes” to any of the following questions, you’re likely in the early stage of your startup journey!

1. Are you focused on refining your idea?
You’re still working on developing and perfecting your core business concept.
2. Are you focused on validating your idea?
You’re actively testing your idea to see if it resonates with potential customers and the market.
3. Are you building your MVP?
You’re in the process of creating a Minimum Viable Product to showcase and test your core value proposition.
4. Are you testing for product-market fit?
You’re experimenting and iterating to see if your product or service truly solves a problem for your target market.
5. Have you raised a pre-seed round?
You’ve secured some initial funding, typically from angel investors, to get your idea off the ground.
6. Do you have a small number of customers?
You’ve started acquiring customers, but the numbers are still modest as you continue to refine your offering.
7. Have you raised a seed round?
You’ve successfully raised a seed round to further develop your product, grow your team, or expand your market presence.
8. Do you have a small team?
Your team is lean, likely consisting of the founding members and a few early hires who are wearing multiple hats.
9. Do you have none or little revenue?
Revenue is either non-existent or just beginning, as you focus on building and refining your product.
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re definitely in the early stage of your startup journey.
